There's not much here yet, sorry.
In a nutshell, my two favorite dances in the world (to dance more than to watch) are lindy hop and waltz.
Lindy hop
For general information on lindy hop, see my Lindy Hop Whiteboard Supreme site :).
A few lindy hop events that I have attended recently include:
-
The Swing Dance For Life City of Hope
fundraiser
- The San
Francisco Lindy Exchange
Here are some videos I like that I think are nicely representative of
social lindy hop:
-
Carla and Nick
-
Ramona and Peter
- Nick and Laura
What's social lindy hop? (as opposed to anti-social lindy hop? :p) It's the type of dancing you'll see (wait for it) on the social dance floor at weekly venues, where people who typically aren't partners (or spouses or lovers or whatever) ask each other to dance, listen to the music, and, well, just dance. Nothing choreographed, nothing pre-planned (unless you count a staple of lindy hop moves) and so forth.
This is probably my favorite type of lindy hop, because IMHO it represents the true spirit of the creativity and playfulness of the dance. Understandably, though, it may be less entertaining to watch than competition or performance lindy hop.
Here are some videos I like that are of lindy hop competitions:
- Skye and Frida
- Snowball Strictly
Lindy
And here's a lindy hop performance (with live music,
too!)
- Gin for Christmas
Waltz
I've studied waltz under the famous and fun Richard Powers.
I used to somewhat frequently attend Friday Night Waltz in Palo Alto, but I've kind of soured on that venue due to the repetitiousness of the music and other factors. Still, particularly if you're new to social dancing and happen to live in the San Francisco Bay Area, I can happily recommend this event to you. The crowd is pretty friendly, the venue is safe (hey, it's in a church :D), and much of the music is pretty fun and nice to dance to.
