I plan to write more about this later and share lots of photos, but in early 2006 I had just gotten a job offer from Google and -- while overjoyed -- I wanted one big thing before I started my exciting new job.
A big glorious vacation. In Australia! In particular, I wanted to go to a lindy hop festival in Melbourne to start, then visit a friend and the great city of Sydney, and finally relax with some outdoor goodness in and around Cairns. Oh, and -- since I'd be in the area -- why not stop by another lindy hop festival in Singapore and visit another fine friend there as well!
But alas, I didn't have a whole lot of cash nor did I have quite enough frequent flyer miles to make it to Australia... so instead, I made a crazy flight itinerary... the one you see below:
TUE 07 SFO-ICN: 13:15-18:45* Korean Air
THU 09 ICN-SIN: 13:10-18:50 Korean Air
THU 09 SIN-SYD: 20:45-10:00*(via CNS) Australian Air (2 flights)
FRI 10 SYD-MEL: 12:15-13:45 Virgin Blue
TUE 14 MEL-CNS: 10:30-15:55 Virgin Blue
MON 20 CNS-SYD: 12:45-16:40 Virgin Blue
FRI 24 SYD-SIN: 11:15-17:45 Australian Air
WED 01 SIN-NRT: 06:00-13:40 Northwest Airlines
Sat 04 NRT-SFO: 15:40-07:55* Northwest Airlines
* = next day
SFO = San Francisco
ICN = Seoul,
South Korea
SIN = Singapore
SYD = Sydney, Aus
MEL =
Melbourne, Aus
CNS = Cairns, Aus
NRT = Tokyo, Japan
As you can imagine, I was rather bushed by the time I got to Melbourne for the festival, and not completely thrilled that my host insisted I stay awake through the late night party ('til 3am). But it was all worth it in the end :-)
